Best Time to Visit Kerala

One of the most common questions we receive at Nature Green Holidays is: "When is the best time to visit Kerala?" The answer depends on where you're going, what you want to experience and how you feel about rain. Here's our honest, month-by-month guide.

Kerala's Three Seasons at a Glance

  • Peak / Winter Season (October – February): Best weather, highest prices, most tourists.
  • Summer (March – May): Hot and dry, fewer tourists, lower prices, some parks close.
  • Monsoon (June – September): Heavy rain, lush greenery, lowest prices, limited outdoor activities.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

October — Excellent

Post-monsoon Kerala is at its greenest and most lush. Waterfalls are at full force, paddy fields are emerald, and crowds haven't yet arrived. This is arguably the most beautiful month to visit. Onam festival (usually August–September) may extend into early October in some years — if you can time it, Onam Sadhya (the grand feast) is an unmissable cultural experience.

November — Peak Season Begins

Temperatures drop pleasantly (18–28°C in the hills, 24–32°C on the coast). This is when hotels begin to fill and prices start climbing. Book 3–4 weeks ahead for houseboat stays. Munnar is perfect — cool, clear and golden. Beaches are excellent.

December & January — High Season

The most popular months. Excellent weather everywhere. Christmas and New Year bring significant crowds and price surges — houseboat rates can double. Book Alleppey houseboats and popular Munnar resorts 2–3 months in advance if travelling during this period. Despite the crowds, the weather is glorious.

February — Ideal

Excellent weather, slightly smaller crowds than December–January, and prices begin to moderate. A genuinely ideal time to visit — particularly good for Thekkady (spice harvest season) and the backwaters.

March & April — Good Value

Temperatures begin rising (30–35°C on the coast, 20–28°C in the hills). Crowds thin, prices drop 20–30%. Hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad remain pleasant. Some water activities at Thekkady are limited in dry years. Holi brings beautiful celebrations if you're in Kerala's towns.

May — Hot but Interesting

The hottest month — beaches and the coast can be uncomfortably humid. Hill stations are still comfortable though. Thrissur Pooram (usually April–May) is one of Kerala's grandest temple festivals — if you're near Thrissur, this is unmissable. Elephant processions, fireworks and traditional music on an enormous scale.

June–August — Monsoon

Kerala receives the South West Monsoon from early June, bringing heavy, continuous rainfall. Roads in hill areas can be treacherous; trekking routes are closed. However, the monsoon has its own beauty — paddy fields turn bright green, waterfalls roar at full strength, and everything feels intensely alive. Rates are 30–50% lower. Houseboat cruises still operate (slowly) and can be hauntingly beautiful in light rain.

September — Transition

Rains begin tapering. Prices are still at monsoon lows, but the landscape is lush and beautiful. A good time for experienced travellers who don't mind occasional showers.

Best Time by Destination

  • Munnar: October to March. Avoid February–April when Eravikulam is closed for calving season.
  • Alleppey backwaters: November to March for best houseboat conditions. Monsoon is beautiful but some operators limit routes.
  • Wayanad: October to May. Trekking is banned during monsoon.
  • Thekkady / Periyar: Year-round, but October to May for wildlife boat rides.
  • Kerala beaches (Kovalam, Varkala): November to April for swimming and water sports.
Our recommendation: If budget is flexible, visit between November and February for the best all-round experience. If you want value, October or March are excellent — fewer crowds, lower prices, and still beautiful weather across most of Kerala.
